My daughter is almost 2 weeks old and she is my burping nemisis! It seems like everyone else can get her to burp right away, and then there I am 20 mins later and nothing. I feel like if I keep doing the patting motion for very long that I'm going to hurt her. So does anyone have any nifty tricks for burping?

There are several different things to try......all three of my kids had to be burped in a different way.
1) "Sit" her on your leg. Lean her over as to put a little pressure on her stomach. Pat her on the back down about where her stomach is. Use medium pats.
2) You could lay her down on her back. Then work her knees towards her abdomen. This can help with both gas issues.
3) Pat her for a few minutes. Then just cuddle her. She will either burp by herself, or she will fuss because she is uncomfortable. You could then pat her some more and see what happens.

Try holding her close to your body, and then rubbing her back - in a circular motion. Rub firmly, and firmer when you are pushing up. That should help. If not - try the Mylocon (spelled wrong) but it works wonders! It's a gas relief for babies. Just a few drops and the baby will burp. Plus, if your baby has gas other times, it can help too. You can find it at Wal-Mart in the baby isle. It is worth it! Good luck!

ok try these ideas. burp frequently. feed an oz... then try putting her tummy down on your lap with her head over your knees. in other words, facing the same direction as you but on her tummy. i would rub from the bottom of the spine to the top. not hard just enough to work out the air bubble. then pat a little then rub. then when u lift her back up she should burp. enjoy the time you get to hold them, it never lasts long enough. good luck

I could never burp my daughter in the early stages and I do believe it is down to the fact you think you are hurting them. I couldn't do it with her on my shoulder I would sit her on my lap facing outwards one hand under her chin and then pat. It also means if she was sick it would go on the floor and miss me. Good luck xx

Sometimes when my daughter wouldn't burp by patting her, I'd start rubbing her back and that would do the trick.

I would ask everyone who is able to get her to burp what they're doing that is different from what you're doing.

I do know that you can try rubbing her back in a circular motion and that might help.

I know this sounds mean, but my doctor said to burp them as if you were going to hurt them (well almost hurt them) you need to give firm pats, you will not hurt her. Soe babies also prefer to be burped over the sholder & some laying across your lap.COngrats

you need to pat rather hard sometimes, not like beating her but a good firm pat. it also helps to use a rubbing motion on their backs, counter clockwise motion. you could also lay her on your knees on her stomach and pat her while she's on them. i used the first method for my first son and the second one for my youngest son because he would never burp for me either and when he did it was like the exercist! hope this helps, holly
