The check engine light in my 97 Honda Accord wagon is lit up. Are there any common reasons for that to happen?

I have over 200,000 miles on it. It seems to be running fine- it has power and it doesn't stutter. Someone suggested that the catylytic (sp?) converter may be plugged. Any other suggestions as to what the problem may be? It is running well in all other ways- although it is due for an oil change.

with the ever rising prices in gas alot of fuels have a different mixture which can make a auto appear to need serviced buy a bottle of stp gas treatment and pour in your tank on every fuel up in a day or two the light should go out. if the C-convertor was clogged you sputter when the motor was cold.

There are a lot of things that it could be caused by. if the oil is low and you have an ex model with vtech then it could come on, oxygen sensor, gas cap, misfire, catalytic converter, and several other things, I would suggest going to autozone because they will read the code for free, they probably wont be able to tell you what will actually fix the problem but the will try to sell you parts. If it is for an egr problem do not buy parts they most likely will not fix the problem on accords. If that is the problem you need the ports cleaned and that should fix your problem.

The check engine light comes on because a sensor has been tripped by something going wrong. ex. misfire,running lean, running rich, the sensor broke, not getting a Reading g from the sensor and so on. the best thing to do is to take it to like an auto zone, which there they can hook your car up to the Obed scanner to see what is wrong with it. some times when a car hits a certain mileage the check engine light will come on meaning to check the engine or do maintenance.

The most common reason is a gas cap not screwed on tightly -- or the cap needing to be replaced.
