Best place to sit on a plane: About 4 or 5 rows back from the front of the plane, window seat.
That way you are in the 1st boarding group, thus assuring you'll have a place to store your carry-on, you are in the front, so you will be one of the 1st to get your drinks and food, you are close to the front restroom, and you can look out the window and enjoy the view, without having it obstructed by the wing.
Once you land, you are one of the 1st people off the plane.
And no, I have never had even the slightest fear of flying.

1. First class
2. Bulk head - That is the first row of seats after first class. They have more leg room.
3. Exit rows - They have more leg room.
I would also recommend an aisle seat. This way you can get up when ever you want without having to ask someone to move.
I am not afraid of flying. It just can be an inconvenience with delays some times.

Long flight or short flight?
I will assume you mean economy class.
Business and First don't usually have the following problems.
Window seats are nice because you have your own little cubby to yourself. Aisle seats are nice because you have access to the bathroom without waking the person next to you.
Sitting in the back sucks, though, because you have to hear the bathrooms flush, people peering over you as they wait around in line for the bathrooms after lunch. Also you get the last pick of the dinner tray. Better to sit in the middle towards the front, and either a window or aisle seat.
I lived most of my life on a plane. I have no fear of flying.

If I'm flying alone, I prefer to sit on an aisle seat (this ensures plenty of leg room and personal space) as close to the front as possible. Especially if it's a long international flight. That way you can be one of the first to get off the plane.

The absolute best place to sit on the plane is in the cockpit, in the left seat. See the above answers.

1st class is the best. If your sitting in coach, then I would suggest either the aisle seat closest to the restroom, or if you like the window seat, then probably sit in front of the wing so you don't have it blocking your view. I used to fly and it never bothered me, but now I hate it.

The safest seat on a plane depends on how the plane crashes. Just get one you're comfortable in.
