Chrysler pretty much bought out AMC to get the Jeep lineup. It was a very smart move, since Jeep has been one of the most steadily profitable parts of the company. It is really unfortunate that AMC came to an end, since they had some really neat and unique ideas, but were never really able to fully implement them because of lack of funding. Their partnership with Renault in the '80s was a disaster too.

Amc was famous for building rather homely looking, and, at times, UGLY cars. The Pacer and the Gremlin are fine examples.
They were pretty good cars from a reliability standpoint, though.
Why Mopar would be interested, is a mystery to me.
UGLY=slow sales=out-of-business

after Lee Iaccoca got Chrysler back on its feet he wanted to expand things , he wanted to buy just Jeep but the guys at A.M.C. said no , you have to buy the whole mess , so he did, and immediately shut down A.M.C. , anything they had that was worthwhile was turned into an Eagle, which he phased out over time and the best from them turned into the Intrepid, he pumped some brains and money into Jeep and it helped make the Chrysler empire attractive to the Mercedes folks when they gobbled it up.
