one third of a lineal yard!

lineal means "line" so a lineal foot is 1 foot. I think the word lineal is only used by pretentious engineers.

It's 12 inches and the term "lineal" is used to differentiate it from square or cubic feet. It's redundant for most purposes but very useful in keeping terms straight in presentations where all three measurements are expressed.
