hi , my older tortoise (greek) has just hatched a little one. The older tortoises are outside inthe garden but i would like to keep this new one (about 2 inches big) inside in my room.

Ive read that i have to let it bask under a uv lamp for a couple of hours every day. the prob is i cant seem to find one and im also low on budget. is a few hours in the sun ok?

and what about food? she doesnt seem to be too keen on lettuce or tomatoes.

What abotu hibernation patterns? Right now its about 20C in my room and thats the lowest it will get. (mediterranean here)

Anything else i should be worrying about? she seems to be in good health.

UV- a couple hours of sun a day is OK for now, but not a good long term solution if you are going to keep it indoors.

Food- babies often do not eat, and SHOULD NOT EAT until the yolk sack is TOTALLY absorbed, and often not for about a week after that.

Hibernation- read the articles at http://www.austinsturtlepage.com In fact, that is a great site for most of your questions!

baby tortoise & turtles are much more interested in meat, try giving it feeder fish or earth worms, but also give it some baby turtle food that can be bought at a pet store. Direct contact with the sun might not be the best idea, go to a garage sale they should have some cheap ones that are in good condition. Not all tortoise have to go through hibernation but if you really want it to, keep it in a basement, or try keeping it with the mother(best idea)

The sun will do if it is in direct contact, until you can get a uv lamp. Another thing you have to realize is it needs to be in a warm environment. The lettuce is good for them, so just keep tring to give it that, but you can also try baby food spinnich, or veggies like that in the baby food.

OMG! DON'T EVER LET A TORTOISE EAT STYROFOAM! THEY COULD GET HEARTBURN AND DIE! THE POTASSIUM IN THE STYROFOAM MIXED WITH THE SPECIAL CHEMICAL COMPOUND FOUND IN A TURTLES SALIVA WITH CAUSE THE TURTLES HEART BEAT EXCESSIVELY FAST!!!!!
