De-clutter. I filmed 15 people moving house this year with a full packing service and the most difficult and problematic moves were ones where people didn't get rid of their clutter first. Get boxes from a storage company and put everything in boxes - that way the boxes stack properly in either the car or van that you are using and damage and breakage is limited.

Do as much of the packing yourself as you can. Depending on where you live, buy your packing materials from a wholesale box or paper company. If you are moving a long distance be sure to tape your boxes with strapping tape on all edges. Mark your boxes with what is in them and/or what room you want them to be in at your next residence. Wrap breakables and delicate items in bubble wrap or unprinted newsprint. You can buy both in large rolls. It is best to hire professional movers for the large items unless you are strong and have some strong buddies to help. Get several estimates from the professionals. They are required to stick by their estimate within a certain percent. Sometimes you can find used moving boxes in the local paper or if you see someone else moving into the neighborhood before you and save a bundle on the cost. Or if you start early you can pick up boxes behind the grocery stores for free. Those boxes sometimes don't close up completely though. Moving is a pain but it can be fun if you are thoughtful and organized. Good luck!

Have everyone in the house pack a suitcase. Enough for a weekend. All the clothes and everything they would use to get ready for the day. Stuff for their shower, hair etc... These get packed in the car with you that way you have them and aren't searching for clothes and so on.
Also, pack a box of basic necessities. Toilet Paper, hand towels and soap for the bathroom. Paper towels, paper plates and plastic ware for the kitchen. Also pack the menu of your favorite delivery place so you don't have to cook. Pack up some stuff that you can easily prepare to eat during the move. You'll be too busy to cook. So making a cooler of food like lunch meats is a good idea. Bring along some bottled water, your favorite soft drinks and don't forget the BEER!!

Don't move things with you that you have no use for. When packing clothes, throw away everything you haven't used in the last 2 years (or give to charity).
Throw away when you pack and when you unpack at your new place, throw away some more.
When you unpack, put all the boxes in one room or the garage if you have one. Only open up one box at a time and put things where they belong before you go to the next box.
Of course remember to mark all the boxes clearly so you know what's in them.
I know you only asked for one tip but I'm a generous person and give more than what is asked for

ORGANISATION IS THE KEY. Get plenty of boxes and labels. Label every single box by ie. Kitchen, Bathroom, Bedroom 1 etc
When you are moving from one place to the other you or the professionals simply move each box into the relevant room and then unpacking and sorting is cut by half. You could color code the labels for each room to make it quicker to identify at a glance. On each label also write down a summary of the contents, i.e. cds, bed linen, toileteries, knives, books etc.
Everything will slot into place sooner.
Good luck and enjoy your new start in life !!!

Moving house is a pain, defo chuck anything that you don't use or need, we didn't use a removal firm we did it ourselves so rent the biggest van you are able to drive. Boxes, boxes and more boxes you will need them all. Pack your clothes in your suitcases and get as many people to help as you can. Pack kids and animals off to a friends or family member. Don't forget to take all your meter readings and tell your phone company you have moved and go to the post office to have your mail redirected for a month or so till you have sorted yourself out. Good Luck :o)

It reads like you are in the UK???
Moving a HOUSE? OR moving from a house to another?
If it's the former, I suggest don't bother.
If it's the latter, I suggest it's accomplished millions of times a year, all over the planet. Each story has it's own horrors and smiles.

Throw/give away junk first and think carefully about what you really want to take. You will be amazed at how much needs to be shifted - think of your worst estimate and multiply by 10.
Make sure you label the boxes eg. Kitchen, Bedroom 1etc. as I'm sure you will be getting help and others won't know where everything goes.
I know thats two tips, but i was feeling generous.

If you decide to hire a moving company check them out with the better business bearu www.bbb.org . If the move is out of state check them with the American Moving and Storage Association www.moving.org before you hire them. Do not accept an estimate over the phone, the cost will usually dramatically increase when they finally see what they are moving.

Label all the boxes saying what room they need to go into. If you want to be even more organised you can number each box, and have a corresponding box saying what's in each box. It goes without saying that you won't get everything unpacked straight away, so if you know where everything is, that's going to help you.
