I have a Dyson - the DC04 and I've had it years. The only thing that I had to replace was the hose when it split (my fault for stretching it too far). Its coped with a 3 bedroomed house with 2 kids growing up plus 2 german shepherds and a cat - all very hairy !! I would say go for the dyson x

I have one and I will never use different vacuum again in my life. I live in a 5000 sq ft house with 9 bedrooms and I have two roommates and me that have long hair along with 2 cats. It cleans the carpet and then pulls the dust from underneath. The first time i used it I filled the container and then emptied it and went back to the same room and vacuumd it again and pulled more dust from the carpet. I have bad allergies so we got the purple one that has extra attachments for pets and usually when i vacuume I have allergy problems but not when i use the Dyson. I Love it so much i let me mom use it and now she wants one too.

dysons are pretty good, we had the original version for a few years, no probs, until i used it on plaster dust after working on the house. That soon blew it up!
Now have a purple/blue multi cyclone jobby. When its clean inside, feels like its pulling the carpet off the floor.
This one overheats when you hoover up plaster dust and cuts out. The foam filter inside gets totally clogged, wash it out and its ok again the following day.
Guess the moral of the story is dont use a hoover to suck up brick or plaster dust and you'll be ok (as service engineer, you'd think i should know better)

I have my own cleaning business and champion Dyson. Anyone would think I was on commission he he. I use several different models but the one I like the most is the DC07. Have a look on the Dyson website for some ideas.

We have had two when they first appeared on the market and they both broke within a year of having them. We were told that the first one was faulty but the second broke exactly the same.
We now have a 'hoover' (as in the brand) and it's excellent, we have had it for 3 years, no problems.
Best thing to do is to briefly register with Which? Magazine and take a look to see what they recommend, they're very rarely wrong!

I have a dyson DC08 and its brill never loses suction and you can see all the bits that you have picked up so feel very satisfied when you have finished hoovering, no faffing about buying bags. Definately worth the extra money

My mum has 2 diffferent ones and they are great, not sure which model but I don't think it really matters that much, she wouldn't buy a vacuum that wasn't Dyson and I can't wait until mine dies and I'll get one too!

They are the best thing ever!!
A quick tip though - we got ours from Currys and if you get a price from their website, it'll be less than in store. So, if you go to the store and quote the website price, they have to match it!
I love my Dyson. The first time I used it it looked like my carpet had been cleaned! We got the red one that's exclusive to Currys.
