Yeah I think the gym would be your best option then if nothing comes of it, it's not like you went on a date. Also there;ll be less expectations on both parts.
Having something to do first time always helps especially if the conversation doesn't flow.

I would ask them to grab a bit to eat at a VERY casual place. That way there is no possible competion thing, and a drink may not be thier "thing" especially if they are into working out.

I think you should stick to asking them things that are both your interest in hun. That way you dont get stuck doing something you dont like and arent being phony. Maybe a nice hard workout then a drink!
