Microsoft Works is a suite of applications that has a cut-down word processor and spreadsheet. Excel is Microsoft's full spreadsheet program which includes lots more functionality.

If you just want to do basic spreadsheet tables and calculations, and you already have Works, then you'll probably be OK. But you won't be able to do any of the advanced things that are only in Excel - macro programming, pivot tables, etc.

A free alternative to Excel if you do need advanced functionality is Open Office, which you can download for free from www.openoffice.org.

Works is a run-down cheap version of the full Office suite. There is a spreadsheet which will do much the same job as Excel, but with only limited features. I'd recommend going to the Microsoft website and reading the features of both packages.

Microsoft works has a little baby spreadsheet type programme that will handle most day to day spreadsheet requirements.

Excel is a huge programme more suited for the scientific, technical or financial community.

Works is suitable for home PCs. the only versions of Excel I have ever seen on people's own home PCs have been pirate copies. It's expensive to buy the genuine software - REALLY expensive. .

Microsoft Works is a basic collection of programs for home users, such as Word (word processing) and Outlook Express (E-mail).
Excel is a program that uses spreadsheets. Excel is one program from the full Microsoft Office Suite; a collection of office programs.
Theres far too much information needed for anyone here to be able to teach you to use Excel - its a huge complicated program! Tutors use print screen shots and work files which we can't do here, and it takes weeks at college to pick it all up.
You can go to somewhere like WH Smiths or Amazon and try to find the New Clait course and European Computer Driving Licence workbooks and c.d's, they cost about £10.
New Clait is for beginners, and ECDL the next level up. You can also do courses at your local college, and search the Microsoft sote for their tutorials.
