simply: supply and demand.
we sport fans like to watch them play. so we support the station that televise the game, we pay tickets to watch it live, we buy their jerseys and mechandises. it's like if it costs 2 bucks to watch the game live, everyone would wnat to go, so eventually, the price rises (since demand's high) to a point where so many can afford and go to fill up the stadium.
all together, the pice tag on a professional sports player, i.e. the amount of profit that he/she can bring in, are then higher than just any typical sports player.

As these guys are the best and needed, a lot of resources have been put in them to produce them and they are rare in nature.
