Branding is important not only in cosmetics but in every type of products marketed especially either globally or nation wide if it has to create believability and acceptance to wide body of consumers. Generic products don't have warranties and are marketed locally, so they have lesser promotional costs so is cheap. Branded products are sold with warrenties and has higher marketing costs. Usually cosmetics are branded for wider acceptance and some marketing take place through word to mouth or feet it effect when you go close to a user. So if it is not branded then sale will not take place as expected. Even to have a brand code is important, so that by the look of the symbol you can identify the quality of the perfume like R product code stands for Paco Rebane or the Christian Dior written in running hands the brand code for Christian Dior.

Branding is really vital for the said Industry as

Cosmetic buyers are mainly get motivated by persons stars and they are very perticular about brands. so branding is very vital. If you see LUX, LIRIL or any other HLL products branding funda is really different. Where as AYUR and other cosmetics has different theme of branding.
so you need to identify ur brands feature, value and personality then you need to attach the brand value with it which will reflect the brand's property.
That can give you better branding.

I think it is very important. Buying cosmetics is not like buying a computer. An AMD based computer may give better performance over an Intel based computer. Through benchmarking, there exists an absolute measure to judge which product is better. With cosmetics, it is more about perception.
