Hello everyone..

Myself and the girlfriend are thinking of going to Kenya to celebrate her birthday on 8th March next year.. We cannot leave England before the 1st March and want to be away for about 2 weeks.. I have heard that the rainy season is in March.. is it wise to go at this time, or should we postpone it to later in the year?

We are looking to do some safari visits but also some time on the beach.. If anyone can recommend any places to go/visit and then stay then that would be awesome.. thanks

Hi there,
March is really not a good time to go to Kenya.
Your best bet is to go in September, the rains will have finished but not too hot! Give your girlfriend the booked tickets on her Birthday so she will still have the surprise on her birthday and will be able to look forward to going in September!

Safari - the Serengeti is an awsome place to go on safari, lots of wildlife and very picturesque. Use a reputable company to arrange your safari and NOT the "Beach boys" who try to sell you safaris on the beach etc.

Either North or South of Mombasa are great, loads of hotels to choose from, ask a travel agent for the best deal, you may even be able to do a deal that includes a Safari. As I have my own place I have not stayed in any hotels but I know that the Southern Palms Hotel at Diani, South of Mombasa is very nice.

As with most places, but more so in Africa, people in Kenya are VERY poor and the unemployment is very high, so DO NOT flash / advertise your valuables around as it is both unfair to them and tempting for them steal. Try not to take too much jewelery, etc, just the essentials. Just basic common sense really!!

Look for "The Lonley Planet guide to Kenya". You can find lots of information in this.

Hope this helps and "Safari Njema" (Good / safe trip in Kiswahili!)

Went there with the wife 4 or 5 years ago ,probably the best holiday we ever had ,and we have had a few, sadly cant rember the name of the hotel ,but it was on bamburi beach,we had a week there all inclusive on the indian ocean ,just north of mombasa ,and then 1 week on safari, not in one of the comfortable lodges but in tents, what an experience ,very comfy proper beds,we saw all the wildlife in there natural habitat, cant describe the experience you have to go.get onto the webb, type in kenya safari holidays ,and you should get all the info you need from there, also look up weather mombasa, and that will give you a better idea of seasonal conditions enjoy ¡

Hey buddy, first of all good choice of location only the timing might be a lil bit off. March sees the onset of the long rains and they can be hectic for safari game drives. But since you mentioned you want to do Nairobi, there are lots of activities to do in Nairobi. First of all you can have a Karen Blixen (Out of Africa fame) museum tour then just a short distance away there's the giraffe center where you get to feed them from your hands. There's also The Bomas of Kenya depicting all the communities from kenya featuring awesome dances and food. There's mamba village a crocodile park. Thent here's carnivore Hotel for party lovers and you get to feast on savoury game meat.
That's just Nairobi, you can drive down the Rift valley to Lake Nakuru which is just 2 hours away from Nairobi and get to see the greatest bird spectacle on earth plus the rare Rhinos and lots of antelopes of enroute to Nakuru there's also Lake Naivasha and Hell's gate National park whose roads are in excellent conditions. Notice I'm avoiding Masai Mara and other major attractions cos of the rains and the risk of getting stuck over there. But on a brighter note Samburu never rains that much and it'd be excellent for a safari. Hope this helps you out.
Concerning security common sense should keep anybody safe as there's no place that's that safe, all the best and enjoy your break, cheers.

You have received some pretty good advice here apart from the negative one about Kenya. There is no place in this earth that has no negative points about it. Its what you make the most of it.

I suggest you speak to the tour operators back in Kenya for more details regarding the time you intend to visit.

Contact Bunson Travel Service who are among the biggest tour companies in Kenya and they can offer you a great deal.

All the best!

Dude, why go to Kenya in the first place? First, it is the rainy season. Second, there are tons of safer, drier countries to visit and yet get everything you want in a safari and Beach.

I was there mid February and it was very dry. We did safari on Masai Mara which was fantastic. If you don't want to go out into the wilds then Nairobi is a great city, with a National Park on its edges where you can actually get hands on with lion cubs etc. Alternatively you could head out to Mombasa on the coast if you want a beach holiday.

I went to Kenya last April. I arrived in the middle of a torrential downpour. Generally when it rained it was really heavy but didn't last too long.
One place you should definitely visit is the Carnivore restaurant in Nairobi.

march is rainy season and it is NOT good for safari as it is muddy and wet and you see less animals.
postpone to June.
do not go to Kenya, go to Tanzania instead.
Kenya is too commercial and very Violante now adays.
Tanzania is much peaceful and more wild.
you can rest in Zanzibar.

It is the rainy season and the torrential downpours, thunderstorms can leave you stranded due to poor infrastructure.
its very beautiful though
