Your full of interesting questions :) The answer to me like you seems simple to help these poor individuals, but unfortunately their Government has control of their lives and mis spends money on arms etc instead of basic needs of these people. We could move in and build houses etc but politics controls our action...it is something charities try to do, but I have other thoughts concerning greedy charities (there are some out there who dont waste our monies)

coming from a 3rd world / developing country. i couldnt help but agree with what most have already pointed out.
1. Help is good but only to a certain extent. Like persons, countries should learn to stand on their own by exploiting their strengths and resolving their weaknesses.
2. Politics is a major problem in every developing nation. Change has to come from within the system.
3. There is a difference in Helping / assisting and Patronizing. Most 1st world countries ask something in return for their assistance and somehow just get the developing nations more into debt.
Citizens of developing nations should institue the change from within.

unfortunately the world is not all equal and some countries have a ruling gov. that is corrupt so even money raised for helping the poor does not entirely get used for this purpose. If we all keep doing our bit no matter how big or small I believe we will sort it out at some point. You have got to think we can not just wade in and say we will sort you out. These things will take time and involves a change in human nature too.

Its not the houses, streets, city's and normal essentials that need sorting out-its the often corrupt governments and self proclaimed "warlords" of these lands that need to be sorted out. Some of these third world country's get more money in aid than you can shake a stick at,or will ever see in your lifetime-have you seen any improvement in these country's infrastructures after aid has been sent?...no,short answer to that!20 odd years ago,a certain "sir bob geldoff" had the world united in the fight for just ONE country, any change there since?-nah,and there's not likely to be.Its politics m'dear, just plain politics.

The answer is laughably simple, but the problem is quite complex.
The answer is stop spending billions on weapons, stop intensive farming of animals and stop being greedy.
By wiping out the national debts owed by third world countries to first world countries, poverty would be all but gone within a decade.
By not eating animals, and breeding them artificially, there would be more than enought grain, soya and crops to feed the world twice over - even at it's current overpopulation level and enough land for everybody to live fairly comfortably.
By not having war, and spending silly money on developing new ways of killing and maiming each other, we could cure 75% of the known illnesses today within 25 years, irrigate all but the most barren of desertland and educate every child in the world to university level.
However, rich people like being rich, people in the first world like eating burgers and oil barrens enjoy the benefits of being able to hold the world to ransom. Apparantly war is a much better idea than peace and religous fanaticism is better than education.
I'm not entirely convinced that trying to save our species is in the best interests of the planet, or the rest of the universe.
Sorry to bring you down on a monday morning and all... but basically, we're a bunch of bastards.

First, there is no real rason why we can't do anything about it - any argument from economics will be wrong wrong wrong. Think about the loss of one human life - nothing can justify that - not even a billion dollars!
We could decide that human beings are selfish, but that is trite in itself - there are plenty of examples of selfless human behaviour and anyone who says the opposite is, more than likely, just trying to justify their own actions.
We could say that it is the fault of the corrupt leaders that is the problem - but that sounds to me like another excuse not to act and to absolve responsibility from ourselves. Our 'civilised' governments are JUST AS BAD - unfair trade laws punish the developing world just as much as the arms dealers.
We must stop the exploitation at home first, which means addressing the faults in our unsustainable economic system. Most of all we must each take responsibility for our own actions AND the actions of our own leaders.
Ask yourself what can I do?

Charities are working hard at providing this and as humans we contribute to that cause.
It's up to the governments to ease the trading taxes and to make a contribution. Some of these countries have been torn apart by wars (US Army, British Forces etc) and internal conflicts, and they are still trying to recover.
The only charity I know that goes all the way, which includes building houses and schools (including teachers) is Humanity First. Possibly, the first and only charity that receives funding solely from private donors (such as myself). And without assistance from the government.

Your right its a disgrace that people are leaving below poverty in the world. what all the rich people need to do is all come together and help the poor countries themselves, go to the countries and don't leave until they see that there money is being spent in the right way. we are all one family THE HUMAN RACE we need to really start helping each other and stop being so selfish and greedy (I'm talking to myself too!!).

The governments of these countries are so corrupt that they take most of the aid given for themselves .The only way to ensure the aid gets to the needy is to provide housing education etc. directly to where it is required. However to do this you need the co-operation of the government in that area and it is most unlikely to be forthcoming. Sadly!

The principal reason is bad governance in many developing countries. Because of endemic corruption almost all aid is miss-appropriated by corrupt government officials. many poor and under-developed countries have plenty of natural resources and the ability to undercut western countries with their cheap work force.
