It's hard to pick one but it's definitely not Bush (either one), Clinton or Reagan. None of them had to face the challenges of an FDR or a Lincoln. Washington had to define the presidency and prove it could work. Teddy Roosevelt defined Americas role in the world in the 20th century. Truman led the transition from war to peace in the years after World War 2.

Teddy Roosevelt. He led troops in battle. He made a speech with an assassin's bullet in his chest. He came down hard on big business. He saved thousands of acres of forests. He was an all around bad ***.

There have been several great presidents in my opinion. Most presidents have had his challenges. Some of them have made better choices. But even our greatest presidents have had feet of clay.

Since you are only asking for one then I have to say Franklin Roosevelt.

President George W. Bush
I don't think anyone else could have handle 911 the way he did. His leadership is an inspiration to us all. Don't get me wrong the war in Iraq is bad but its not as bad as the media make it look.
