melting is when a substance changes frm de solid to the liquid state, often due to a rise in temperature.
but dissolving is when a substance is added to a solvent and mixes with it to form a new substance.

maybe u can think of melting as involving only one substance, whereas dissolving has to involve at least 2 substances..

hope that helped :)

Melting

In physics, melting is the process of heating a solid substance to a point (called the melting point) where it turns liquid. An object that has melted is molten.

Explanatory

Not only is heat required to raise the temperature of the solid to the melting point, but the melting itself requires heat; see also latent heat and heat of fusion.

From a thermodynamics point of view, at the melting point the change in Gibbs free energy (ΔG) of the Material is zero, because the enthalpy (H) and the entropy (S) of the material are increasing (ΔH,ΔS > 0). Melting phenomenon happens when the Gibbs free energy of the liquid becomes lower than the solid for that material. At various pressures this happens at a specific temperature. It can also be shown that:

Dissolve

The term dissolve has several meanings:

In biology, to dissolve means to separate liquids from solids to gases. That eventually turn into evaporation. That means that dissolving is the complete cycle of science.
In chemistry, it is the act of solvation, a solute is dissolved in a solvent, creating a solution. A solute may be solid, liquid, or gaseous.
In film and video editing, it means a gradual transition between pieces of footage. See dissolve (film).
The term also refers to the process of dispersing into smaller parts or making something disappear

Melting is when a substance changes from solid to liquid, usually by the application of heat. Dissolving is when a substance is added to a liquid (solvent) and is intimately dispersed in it at the molecular level, i.e. not just small particles.

melt is when the atoms multiply from the heat, become soft. the top of the object in question becomes soft first and collapses on itself.
with dissolve its faster, so its not just the top of the object that softens first, and it usually just becomes a pile of runny putty. also, melt is a term used if something softens from heat, and dissolve is a term usually used to describe something that has softened because of chemicals. hope this helps answer your question
