I like the name Flora for a girl. It's my husband's grandmother's middle name. I found out recently that she hates it. I think it's pretty. I'm just looking for opinions OUTside the family. Thanks.

I am a scientist, so I understand the meaning of the word. It really is "growth," which is why "normal flora" is "regular bacterial growth in the body." It doesn't mean "bacteria" specifically. I didn't know about the margarine. Keep the opinions coming, and thanks again.

I'm not sure why Grandma doesn't like the name. I'm not pregnant now. We're just talking about it. Kelley, the point here was to look at an old fashioned name. I'm not into the "modern" naming of children. Some are okay. To me, most are just weird. Thanks for your answers.

Flo is okay with me. When she's older, she can correct people if she doesn't like it, right?

Its' not terrible, i've heard baby names that are much more strange than this. It's just that it's not such a common name. Flora means 'flowering'. The only problem it would be that it sounds kind of old fashioned.

Flora is a pretty name.
How close are you to the grandmother? If she really hates the name, she may be upset if you use that name. On the other hand, this is your daughter, not hers.
The name is very pretty. If you have your heart set on that name, just call your new little one Flora. Everyone will get used to it.

i agree with you i like old fashioned names that actually mean something to the family and not just a fashion statement for a child who unfortunately has to live with the parents temporary moment of insanity! flora is a lovely name, but remember people will cut it down to flo, whether you like it or not1

Flora is a very cute name, and she can shorten it to Flo when she gets older as she might think it slightly 'babyish'. It's certainly not a common name, my sisters name is laura and she wished she was called Flora!

Flora does have something to do with bacteria. I work in a lab and bacteria commonly found in the vagina is usually referred to as normal vaginal flora.
I have also seen a person name their child Candida. This is the bacteria that causes a yeast infection. My vote is no. But its not my child.
Good Luck

It's not a terrible name, but I don't like it for a baby girl. When I hear Flora, I think of the margarine we use or my friends maid. I think Emma is beautiful and simple.
