Maruti Esteem is a mid size sedan with a 1300cc engine, and has the best power to weight ratio in its class, i.e. the best pick-up! Its mileage is around 14Kms per litre in city driving conditions. Whereas Maruti-800 is a basic car which is good for city driving, cause its short and easy to manoeuvre and to park. Mileage is around 22Kms/litre. Its is not comfortable for tall people. Alto is better. Spares wise M-800 has cheapest prices. Both are very easy to maintain and do not breakdown often, if geunine spares are used. Choice is yours whether you require more space with power OR less space with less power with more mileage. Always test drive any car before buying so that you can get the feel of it.

it is twice as better in the good things - space, performance, ride and handling. And nearly twice as bad in everything to worry about, price, fuel efficiency, and spare parts pricing (though this is coming down for the esteem)
the 800 is a very basic car. no luxury features, and is a horrible drive
