"In a study spearheaded by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) in collaboration with Commonweal, researchers at two major laboratories found an average of 200 industrial chemicals and pollutants in umbilical cord blood from 10 babies born in August and September of 2004 in U.S. hospitals. "

"This study represents the first reported cord blood tests for 261 of the targeted chemicals and the first reported detections in cord blood for 209 compounds. Among them are eight perfluorochemicals used as stain and oil repellants in fast food packaging, clothes and textiles — including the Teflon chemical PFOA, recently characterized as a likely human carcinogen by the EPA's Science Advisory Board — dozens of widely used brominated flame retardants and their toxic by-products; and numerous pesticides.

Of the 287 chemicals we detected in umbilical cord blood, we know that 180 cause cancer in humans or animals, 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous system, and 208 cause birth defects or abnormal development in animal tests. The dangers of pre- or post-natal exposure to this complex mixture of carcinogens, developmental toxins and neurotoxins have never been studied."

PS. this is a wake-up call to those that didn't. No offence meant.
And what do you do know that you now?

Littleluv: Your answer shows that, now you know about chemicals in new borns, your choice is to be ignorant of the facts. If facing the truth is too scary then it is your perogative to be ignorant. I have a three-year old and find ignorance hard to live with.
Personally i have started by cooking my food in stainless steel pans. Maybe more washing up but a few less chemicals in my daughter's system and it gives her system the change to clear out that from before i knew.

gee thats really bad. oh what ever shall we do. come on lady get a grip. don't come on here trying to scare all the pregnant ladies. What the hell is wrong with you. Yes those chemicals in abundance can cause problems in lab animals. Maybe you should do a litttle more research or maybe you should get another hobbie that does not involve scaring prenant women.

Analytical chemicstry is headed towards detection limits that will allow us to measure 1000's of chemcials in any kind of matrix. The levels we can detect chemicals is getting so low that we are finding that many are produced by nature in levels that we could never see before. Yes, there are chemicals out there. Compare life spans today versus 100 years ago (the good old days). Those nasty chemicals are part of an economy and medical science that allows you to live to almost 80 years old as compared to 40-50 years old in the "good old days". The poster that says we are more unhealthy is just wrong. Man is more healthy today that ever before. We are getting fat, we are so healthy. Just look at one nasty chemical - chlorine. Without it we would have cholera deaths from tainted water in the many thousands in the US every year, many of them children. Thank God for nasty old chlorine. There are many more chemicals that are saving our lives. We are living the best lives of humans at any time on earth. Do you really want to go back to the "good old days".

Yes, we need to do better and those of us that do this work and research this work are doing our best. But people if you really believe strongly there is a problem, start in your own house. No store bought cleaners, no canned or packaged food, no CAR, no CDs, no IPOD, no makeup, no deoderant, no sprays of any kind, etc. How many of you are willing to bite the bullet?

I didn't know those exact facts but most people will have a good idea of the extend of these problems. Up to each individual on how or if they deal with this. Please remember though that scaring people is not necessarily the best way to deal with this.

in response to your question, no i didnt know that. How scary and frightening is that tho. What chance do we stand in life if we're being poisoned before we even leave the womb??????.....................none taken, but dont know what can be done, as far as i can see our corrupt goverments dont want to do anything even tho the answer is probably quite simple. i think we just have to pray for a miracle. Sad but probably true.

I didn't but I could have guessed it. Humans are getting more and more unhealthy every day and we are consuming so much pollution and toxins.
