Once they are established on solids is a good time. One thing to do though is even if you breast feed him, still give him a bottle a couple of times a week otherwise you are going to have a very hard time getting him to drink from a bottle. When babies are only breastfed there will be a battle of wills when it comes to bottle feeding. I know a few babies that will not drink milk at all because they were breastfed until they were one and had never had a bottle, so all the milk they have now is on cereal and yogurts, not very good when they should be having about a pint a day until they are about 4.

There aren't any rules about when to stop breast-feeding. As long as the baby is of eating age- and eating appropriate solid foods.
So yes 9 months is fine, and well done for breast feeding !!!!

Can you make it to 12 months? Then you won't have to introduce formula! The AAP suggests breastfeeding for *at least* 12 mos. At 12 mos baby can start whole milk instead of going onto formula.
IMO, the BEST way to stop is to follow the child's lead and let him decide when he is done.
If that won't work for you, then another good option is "don't offer/don't refuse."
If you need to go a little faster than that, I'd suggest cutting one feeding approx every 5 days. If you are still feeling engorgement, then you need to wait a bit before cutting the next one. This helps to make the process gentle on both mother and baby.

I did my other 2 until 13 months but they came off themselves as it was too exciting to do other things ie once walking etc.I am still feeding my 10 month old but only first thing in morning and last thing at night but even night one shes coming off.Whens best for you is the right answer i think.I certainly wouldnt do it any longer than 18 months though

It's really up to the individual, i breastfeed my oldest son until he started teething at ten months, it's all down to the individual. The longer the better for both mother and baby.

i think most people try to make it to a year. thats what i did. but the baby will be fine as long as you slowly switch between breast milk and formula. Good luck and congrats on the baby.
