We "hanker" after money and power because they are intoxicating. Once you have some, you want more and more. At first this thirst can be good; it becomes bad when you lose sight of your goals. Personally, I recommend that people set goals and meet those goals without going beyond them to prevent themselves from getting drunk with power. So, there is nothing wrong with "hankering" after money and power as long as there is a goal in mind. People who don't "hanker" after power are usually the ones who don't have any.

Money or power does not drag us down from being a good human beings. It what we do with it.
Do you how Spiderman's saying: "With great power comes great responsibilty", well what happens is that some people forget the responisbilty part. We all want the little nicities, the better car, the better job, etc. It's whether or not we use the things responsible or not which separates the "good" people from the "bad".
That's my explaination anyway, hope it helps.

Oh the answer is simple because this world is an illusion or Maya and money and power are the biggest source to get attracted towards and get stuck with this Maya or illusion. A saint knows how unworthy these two things are so he leaves it and start the journey within and finds the real thing there which is contentment and peace.

I think your question pre-supposes that our intentions for earning money / power are for selfish gain.
In most cases you may be correct. But not all.
There are alot of people in this world who work very hard to earn money and power to use for good. You could say I am one of those people. My sister is disabled and my parents are quite old, so I am climbing the corporate ladder so that I can provide a much better situation for all three of them. However I have my own family to think of and my own life - so my financial earnings have to be substantial in order to do the best for all of us.
My husband and I earn alot of money, but my aims are to be in a corporate position where I have alot of power and financial earnings, and my only satisfaction from this will be when I can accomplish all of the above said ideals.
The other aim I have is to be able to volunteer and financially support a Down's Syndrome charity. Until I have the power of position and finances to do so, I don't have the freedom to contribute in any considerable amount those things at this time.
We 'hanker' after money and power for many reasons - not always selfish. If I was selfish, I would want to buy a yacht, a fast sports car, a big mansion, and lie in bed all day with a maid to do all the housework.
Richard Branson, owner of Virgin has just donated $3-billion to help fight global warming. We could be cynical about that and say he has so much money it's a drop in the bucket.... But I really do feel that it shows courage and an unselfish character to turn out his own personal profits for the good of humanity.
Bill Gates, and his wife, has donated hundreds of millions toward vaccines for the third world. They have not only donated, but have set up their own foundation that is developing vaccines against life-threatening diseases.
Again you could be cynical and say 'drop in the bucket!, but it takes a considerable courage of character and leadership to take those steps for the sake of humanity. These men should be noted and thanked for their contributions.
Oprah Winfrey, Martha Stewart, and many many very wealthy people who have worked their way up from poverty are giving back in copious amounts to the world.
I can see what you are saying in your question, but I see things differently.

Those who crave money and/or power don't have "being a good human being" as their ultimate goal, if it's one of their goals at all. Good people put morals first and everything else second. Why do you think that most people with money & power are corrupt? Because greed isn't a virtue. Nice people aren't greedy. They usually aren't rich & powerful either.

i too have wondered just like this. but the answer i could finally evolve is, its not that we hanker, we r made or dragged to be after money. its the social set up----some of the few evesdroppers getahering near household to sitting on a coffe table are the people who continue to churn the humankind.....can anyone stop it......
in one way, it would imply that press rests!......

Aaaah....I smell dueling of minds. Lets say you get all the power and I get all the money. I am A, you are B.
A: Buys your mother (C)
B: Kills A
B: C makes you feel bad about yourself
B: Returns A and takes his money
A: Laughs at B and gives his mother a tender kiss.
THE END

It could be something to do with how money and power makes the brain feel good with endorphins. People want to feel good and having creature comforts, or power, etc. feels better than self sacrifice.
Hypothetically speaking, of course ;)
