A character would be a person. If you don't want to see a person you could avoid him, while a characteristic is something in about a person that cannot change. It is the way of the person and you cannot avoid it.

I think it has to do with the lesson you are supposed to be learning from that character. If you ignore the character to ignore having to learn the lesson, the characteristic will emerge in someone else you know or you will meet a new person with that characteristic. This will keep happening until you deal with the lesson to be learned!

character is a group of characteristic. it's not much people with same character.
but characteristic is smaller unit. and there's so many people with certain characteristic.
for example:
A is grumpy, likes to frown, never satisfied, always complaint and other things.
that's the character of A. you might be able to avoid people with that kind of character.
but what about someone who's always complaint?
you cannot tolerate A, but you can tolerate B, who always complaint, but B rarely frown and he has good sense of humor, that he ends his complaints with jokes to make people laugh and not taking his complaints too hard.
a lot of people likes to complain, and it will actually be harder for you to avoid that characteristic.

Avoid whose character ? Neither our own nor of others, even our great grandfather's !
They started the de-forestation, and we face lack of greenery.
Their character failed to respect nature , because it was characteristic of them to be so, having evolved only to that extent.
