i have always felt safe in athens. and i think its very safe for a 5 million people city ,i often walk home alone at late night, taking buses and subway all night long is absolutely safe, something i couldnt do in germany in a 70.000 thousand people city, but on the other hand breakings are very often nowadays. when i was a child (80s) when it was very hot we often slept in the yard leaving the house door open! now that would be a reaaalyyy stupid thing to do, still i ve never heard of anyone getting harmed by a breaking.
why? i have two thoughts about that. first that the city never sleeps and there is always some (good) traffic around, second that i think (and hope) that if i scream, people will run to see if i m ok instead of looking away.
nevertheless, i wouldnt walk alone nights in a few neighbourhoods, thats true.

Athens is safe, as safe as a world city can be nowadays.
As if the world pays respect to one the main roots of the world.
Looking into the past & great history of Greece, it has suffered heavily because of its unique position.. but we all have to take care of this heritage and keep it safe ...
I will feel secure during my coming Xmas holidays in Athens this year.. leaving Brussels 24/12 & returning 1/1/2007..
Enjoy Greece

it depends on where you live in Athens, but compared to most countries it is still pretty safe. There are a few areas that you should not venture to after certain hours and you have to watch pick pockets, we have alot of them here especially on the bus and train. But in general greeks are helpful so if you have a problem with anyone on the street most likely someone will come along to help you.

Athens does have crime more than the 70s but it is still much much much safer than other countries.
I think that when Greek people see trouble they are more apt to help others rather than just walk on by.
I was once in America and I saw some lady getting the heck beat out of her and noone did anything. Just walked by. Not saying Americans are uncaring but they dont want to get involved. If that were to happen in Greece , whoever is on the street would be helping. ( not beating the lady up!)
Also you do get your occasional youth crime but not as horrendous as mass murder etc as in other countries that teenagers are capable of.
There are no metal detectors in schools either.

It is still very safe. It has grown bigger over the last years though and there are a lot of imigrants but when you are moving around Syntagma Squ. everything is very safe. the same if you want to move around Gazi area or in all suburbs.Of course train stations are a bit.... strange but the underground( metro) is superb.
It is the 10th time that I visited Athens. The reason it is so safe it is because Greek people care and their Gods are protecting them. :-))

i ll give you an example..
Olympic games. even though many money were spent on safety in Athens during the Olympics, Athens would be unable to handle terrorism.but the Olympics were completely safe. it was not how much we had spent but Greece is safe its self. i can't answer why. maybe we don't provoke anyone. or no one would have benefit to do it to Greece.

can you imagine what would happen if olympics took place in the U.S.A? i really don't want to think about it..

Athens is very safe for the most part. there are a couple of neighborhoods you want to watch yourself at night -just like any other big city.

In the '70ies it was very safe.
It is also very safe today.
Of course, like in all big cities, there are pick pockets and burglers but the crime rate is generally speaking low and 95% of the illegal persons are mostly financial immigrants or branches of other countries mafias.

One of the safest and most friendly cities in Europe and far safer than most American towns. Students don't go into school an shoot up their classmates here.
