United Kingdom topped the list in terms of economics, politics and sciences before the great war. After that, UK dramatically went down the rank and is nowhere to be found... not even in the top 5 countries. What happened? Any ideas you think should have caused UK to fall... Thanks.

The UK was an empire before WWII, and much of it's power came from income from these colonies, but in the years after WWII, UK lost most of it's colonies.
having a weak economic system in the UK itself, with too many unions and little economic efficiency, the economy of the UK declined, and with that came the decline of science and political standing.
But Thatcher changed the UK economy, and the UK is now a leader in the EU.

Complacency. The view that we are the best (well, certainly in Europe) when other European countries had advanced and we have not.

Incompetence and general mismanagement in most if not all public services.

You will hear many English people talking ill of other countries, incompetence of foreigners and all that, but what most people don't seem to get is that other countries actually work, where as most of our services are pretty rubbish.

You go to the underground in say, Madrid, and the trains run on time and the signals work and it's clean. Same as the hospitals, the schools...

England is probably the same now as in the 70's, if not worse, but everyone else is moving forwards.
