hmm. ultraviolet?
flies and purple lights- they love untraviolet lights. then die.
bees/wasps- the voilet colouring in plants- so they know where to collete pollen
butterflies- thats why there are "butterfly plants"... ultraviolet pigmentation...
moths: the light makes them blind. they fly away from the light, they can see it and become attraced to it again, fly next to it, become blind... fly in a frenzy... move away... etc

Probably because they're dumb, and when they see a bright light, they assume they are in a dark cave and the light is the way out.
