i have thought for long time that this was going to happen, so why are we only reacting now?this country(England)seems so behind sometimes. My mum always said prevention is better than cure,so why dont the people leading our country stop spending money in the wrong places and really sort it out. sorry it makes me cross! taxing people is not the only way and could have been avoided.

I'm afraid it's too late. On average politicians are only elected for 5 - 10 years max. and on average we only live for between 70 - 90 years. Nobody seems to have the political will or power to do anything to stop this happening and although Greenpeace and other environmentalists have been banging on about it for the last 30 - 40 years nobody wanted to listen or believe them. I flew over the Arctic Ice Edge just over 30 years ago and it had already retreated 200 miles from where it was supposed to be. If the Gulf Stream 'switches off' then the whole thing will be ireversible as I already believe it is. Polar bears will probably be extinct in the wild inside the next 20 years and the next to go will be the penguins. Earth might survive if mankind disappears in the next 200 - 500 years - but then it will be back to the law of the jungle and the survival of the fittest - but it won't be humans anymore. It isn't you or your children or your grandchildren that need to worry - but the further down the line you go - the bleaker it looks. We have a lot to answer for as a species I'm afraid. Kind regards N.

I was born when houses were lit with candles and oil lamps, really.
I have seen the beginning of, Gas, Aeroplanes, Wireless, Electricity, T.V. Radar, Rockets, A. Bombs, H. Bombs, Computers and developments of all of these.
One day I plotted this type of progress on a graph and about 1870 the steady curve turned into a straight line rapidly approaching vertical.
To me it seemed to be heading towards extinction.
I pondered all sorts of theories at this time, and by chance, I came across another man of my age who had the same theory.
For the last sixty years he had been plotting something that confirmed my thoughts.
Being a Marine Engineer he spent time doing the same thing as I but with Ocean Currents.
Neither of us in 1985 knew anything, or even thought about, Global Warming.
He died ten years ago before it started to become known.

Something had to stop that near vertical line and I am glad it is something that's possible to rectify.
However, this is the only warning we will get, and unless we change from profit driven society to lifestyle one we have had it.

What, you're complaining that it's not cold yet? The effects of global warming are too slow. We are not willing to sacrifice the short-term convenience for such a distant, vague future benefit. I think humans are too short-sighted and short-lived to prevent global warming at this point. We'll just adapt.

the Stern report has just been released in your country.
up until now there hasn't been enough public support to allow the gov't to do very much.
anyway, I'm tired of people who bleat "we must act now"
because the simple fact is we need to reduce carbon emission by about forty per cent from todays level, worldwide.
I don't believe that's going to happen any time soon.

The planet is in dire need of salvation and i'd be more than happy paying taxes for that. It would be probably the most important tax the government has ever brought in. Better late than never, Although yeh, they are d**ks for leaving it this late

It does not matter what we do, global warming is with us and that's it. So now the Govt just wants to use it as a means og getting more tax from us.

SCAM

There is NOTHING scientific about global doomsday environmental predictions. Predictions about 50 years into the future are so unreasonable, so non-scientific it makes me cringe.

No chance I pay a tax.

This is a global problem, and the first obstacle to get over is to get the Americans and Chinese on board. if this doesn't happen what we do will make little impact i fear.
