I just read an article, talking about obesity in America---& it said that kids today are 133% larger than they were 15 years ago.
Not sure how anyone can be 133% of anything...LOL!!...but that was the # in the article.
Anyway---I DO see a real problem, w/ kids sitting at their PC's, X-Boxes, PS2's, etc...all day long...not getting any excersise.

But I digress...

My survey is: did anyone else read that article? If so, what do you think?

The 133% is like saying a kid weighs 100 pounds this year.
Next year, he weighs 200 pounds; a 100% increase.
The following year, 233 pounds; 33% more than last year and 133% more than 2 years ago.

Not everything equals 100%.

Other articles talk about America as a whole being 85% overweight. It isn't just the kids. It's parents not cooking and families not eating together anymore. It's fast food and junk food snacks. Parents setting bad examples and not enforcing anything.

I had video games as a kid but I couldn't watch TV until homework was done and even then only if my grades were good. AND only for 2 hours a night!! Video games were for weekends and bad weather for the most part.

The Boomer Generation only has themselves to blame although they've spent the last 20 years blaming everyone else (tobacco, McDonald's, A.D.D. , Ridlin, timeouts etc). No real discipline leads to disorder and chaos.

The next 20 years will be very interesting indeed. Keep an eye on heart disease, stress and diabetes related problems.

Good luck and stay healthy.

I read the article and I agree, however, I'm not much to talk..I would be considered "obese" by the clinical standards. But, as far as the reason behind kids being that way..well, who's REALLY to blame? I say it's not only the kids responsibility but also the parents. The kids wouldn't have video games and PS2's and all that stuff if their parents didn't allow them to. When I was a kid, I grew up in the country. We didn't have PS2's and all that. My closest friend that was my age was about 2 1/2 miles away, and I would ride my bike to go see her, and then then we'd ride our bikes around town all day. We would play kickball in the empty lots by my house and play baseball in the middle of the road (not a good idea if you live in the city). Also, my parents made me do yard work, like mowing the grass.

Kids are spending way too much time in front of computers and TVs and not moving. When I was little we played outside from sunup to sundown. Kids need more of that these days.

No, I didnt see the article but agree that kids are fatter than ever. This is because of 'supersizing' (even kids meals have bigger sizes now!!) And, kids today have no concept about 'playing' outside. Using their mind and bodies rather than the computer and ps.

Yes, It's sad as a culture we promote that behaviour. But what I have noticed is that it's not just kid's being overweight but underweight as well. There seems to be no middle anymore, It's just one extreme to the other.

Yes, I read it.
It's not new news, but it still needs some new direction and better planning in place to support healthy children that do not have to battle obesity.
