Less than $40, and doesn't work well.

I don't remember the cost but it was reasonable. We had a bad experience because, when we got our carpet we requested the thickest padding. It turned out that the padding got saturated and the rugdoctor could not slurp all the water out of the padding. As you can imagine it smelled horrible by the next day. We had to leave windows open and fans blowing on it until it finally dried, but it took a week.

I've rented one but only for carpets. They do a decent job but not great. I'd call a company that specializes in cleaning and have them do it (or at least get a quote from them on price). The entire rental plus the extra shampoo was around $65 for one day. We used a lot of shampoo. It doesn't go as far as you'd think...

I don't remember how much it costs, but it works ok. For a quick easy clean, you can't beat the rugdoctor.
Only thing that sucks is that you have to buy their solution if you want to get all the stains out. It will, but the stains eventually come back.

The rug doctor rents out by the day.It will clean your carpet like new again. The rent is 24.95 per day and when used correctly it cleans the carpet back to new.Remember to fill the tank with hot water because that works the best

I'm about to rent it and its $20 a day. Not including an bottles of special cleaners which are about $7 a bottle.
To buy is about $700, I saw a commercial for it and went to the site and looked it up. it looks like it should work great on my white carpet that is the only way for my dogs to go in and out. (Duh, WHAT were the previous homeowners thinking?!?) Anyway, I plan on trying to clean it, or have to buy new carpet before we move.

You usually rent them for 24 hours. Prices will vary according to region and store. Walmart is cheap around here (less than $20 per day). They work fine. Just don't drench your carpet. If your carpet is really bad, you may need to do it twice (allow the carpet plenty of time to dry in between).
Most of the time, I just use vinegar and water in it. My carpets look great and stay cleaner longer.
"Many recommend just using hot water alone to clean carpets (no detergents… they can build up and actually attract dirt). For a natural way to clean and deodorize, use a solution of one part white vinegar to two and half parts hot water. Can increase to one part white vinegar to one and half parts hot water if a really strong solution is needed."
