I was always told (I'm no zoologist) that they have an internal "radar" system. They send the signal out and they know where they are when the signal returns to them. Pretty cool actually.

Bats By Nature Are Blind, And Only Rely On Ultra Sonic Sound Waves Which Hit Objects (Ex: Trees) And Bonce Back. Thereby Letting The Bats Know That There Are Objects Upfront when Flying. These Ultra Sonic Sound Waves Can Only Be Audible To The Bats, And Are Either In A High Frequency Or Low Frequency Pattern Thereby Making It In - Audible To Humans.

"SONAR", they give out a high pitched chirp, this aids them in food location (BATS ARE NOT BLIND) finding an insect at night while flying fast is the only way to achieve this (pretty cool huh) when the echo comes back, they know there is a bug there (or an obstacle like a phone wire on a pole), I used to watch the Bats when I worked the GRAVEYARD shift in the summer, amazing creatures, and so helpful to the environment, they eat tons of mosquito's every night, they were misunderstood because they are "Nocturnal", no Bat ever attacked anyone, they are timid, and only have interest in eating bugs. I'm glad that I got to see them, and understand them better, man can they change direction fast in the air ! One night at about 2AM I was looking up at the HUGE moth flying around the street light, for a split second I saw the outline of a bat dive through the light, and just moth wings were fluttering to the ground, it was really COOL !

Bats squeak when they fly. This ultrasonic sound that strikes the objects and returns to the organ on the nose commonly called radar. This gives them the idea of the position of the object and helps them from hitting the object. Secondly, bats are not blind: they have far greater number of rods in the retina of their eyes. Rods are concerned with intensity of the light. Bats can detect some amount of light in the darkness and that enables them to see in the dark.In the daytime, they feel the light of the day so much that they are blinded by the light as we get when the head light of the car directly falls on our eyes.

There are two suborders of bats:-
Megabats(not all megabats are larger than microbats)
Microbats
Bats fly in the dark using a special technique called "echo location."
Out of these two orders the microbats eat insects, small mammals, suck blood and also eat fish, and they eat at night,so vision isnt very useful in the dark,so they developed special organs, which emit sounds, and this sound bounces off anything it hits, and goes to the bat,and like this the bats can produce a rough 3D image of their surroundings. This whole technique is called echo location, and only the microbats use it(but 1 megabat called rousettus, also called the flying fox,and its relatives, use this echo location technique).Megabats usually eat fruits and nectar,so they dont need echo location, because fruits dont move.

They emmit an extremely high pitched sound which bounces off objects around them, like walls and other bats. (sometimes you can hear the lower frequency screeching.) Its kinda like a SONAR in a submarine. There brain processes all the sound that bounces back towards them and paints a mental picture like what we see except with sound... this gives them an extremely good idea of what they are about to hit, or dodge.

Bats fly using echo location, much as Dolphins can locate prey under water.

Resonance- They emit a noise when they fly and if it receives it back there is an obstacle and it deflects its path or sth similar to this....i read it a long back i dont remember well!! Better check out howstuffworks.com...you'll find a detailed explanation over there!! All the Best :)

bats can hear ultrasonic sounds as well as produce them. in the dark, they send ultrasonic sounds which hit the objects and reflect back. by hearing these reflected ultrasonic sounds, bats can locate the object and move accordingly.
thnx!

They are blind.
They navigate using Sonar and Radar.
Or is it Radar and Sonar.
