Do not drink or eat anything after 7pm. One hour before going to bed turn off all extra lights and noises and then read a book. Next, take a warm bath, and soak for 20 minutes. When you get out of the bath drink a warm glass of water, and make sure your body is warm as well. When your lying in bed, try not to let thoughts run through your mind. Instead, tighten all your muscles then visualize all your body parts and relax each part one at a time. Do this over and over again. If you don't want prescription meds, then you could take a benadryl 1 hour before going to bed, this will help too. Limit caffiene throughout the day, and limit sugar. If this doesn't work, then you may need to get a sleep study done (even if your not sleeping). If your taking prescription medications for other conditions, it could be possible that those medications are disrupting your sleep. I hope I can help you. Oh, PS if you have trouble snoring, or are overweight a little, you could possibly have Obstructive sleep apnea....if you snore alot, try breathe right nasal strips and try sleeping in a recliner or elevate your bed a little. Best of luck to you. Sweet dreams!

if you buy some chamomile tea (bag form is fine) and boil it (not just soak or steep it) for a few minutes you should relax enough to get to sleep. this tea is an herbal sedative remedy not a med so it should meet your need. a friend of mine had the shakes from stopping drinking alcohol and i couldn't provide any Valium so i administered this tea......it stopped his shakes.
other than that you could try heating milk and drink before bed time. it works.......but you simply can't consciously wait for effects to kick in or your body will over ride it. remember that the mind is really the strongest implement you'll ever know and is capable of more than we know.
Shakespeare wrote "there are more things in heaven and earth than are imagined in your philosophy" and your mind can work with or against many of them.
