World War one started in 1914. The telephone was first invented almost a century earlier. Yes. Telephones were used as a communication device during the first World War. They even had field telephones to communicate during battles to direct artillery and also give orders for troop movements. There obviously were more lines and wires involved back then and the telephones could get knocked out and rendered useless quite often.
