If you like fantasy, go track down the Artemis Fowl Books, there are three or four of them out now, and all very good. Everybody but my dad has read them in my family and loved them. Very fun.
Alton Gansky does a variety of things. Suspense, mystery, some social themes. All very well done, though some of them have a touch of supernatural in them, and some have quite a bit. (not fantasy style, more in a realistic style). Some tackle controversial topics.
The dragon's eyes (or through the dragon's eyes...can't remember) by Stephen King was very good (not horror. He wrote it for his 12 year old daughter who did not like his scary stuff. Very good story.
K.A. Applegate's series "Remnants" Has been very good so far. Nice easy reads. I'm not sure what age their actually written for. I'd say it's probably speculative fiction/fantasy ...ish. I haven't finished the whole series yet. I had to wait my turn :-P

anything by l m montgomery (the author of anne of green gables) for romance. she writes sweet, drawn out love stories in the best classic style
anne mcafery for sci fi. she wrote dragon novels (my favorites being the harpers of pern)
madeline l'engle for comentary and romance and sci fi in one! (she wrote a wrinkle in time) all of her books are exellent.
terry pratchet writes absolutely hysterical sci fi, mixed perfectly with social commentary. his novels about discworld paralel the real world excellently.
