As far as individual disasters go it would be a toss up between The effects of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and Mississippi .It could be the US’s worst natural disaster, with a projected 10,000 or more people dead and its biggest refugee crisis since the American Civil War.
One of the worst natural disasters in the United States struck on April 18, 1906. An earthquake measuring 8.3 on the Richter scale destroyed much of San Francisco. The quake killed 3,000 people and destroyed more than 500 city blocks -- about 28,000 buildings

I believe it's the Sun...well the resulting heat strokes and exhaustion from a heat wave. Did you know that folks that don't have a/c thought that keeping windows closed and using fans would get them cool but in reality are making their place like a convection oven?
