The word beta is refered to as software that is currently still in the test phase and may contain bugs. Also beta can mean a trial period in which software is tested by a large group of people to find and remove bugs before going public.

Currently a great example of beta software is Windows Vista, it has been in beta almost 2 years, and is due to be released by the end of next month.

In reference to software Alpha is the first version whereas Beta is the second. You will often see this like for example: Winamp alpha referrring to the first version or 1.1 or 1.2 for the Beta or second version of the software. This is just an example. Beta has other meanings but usually refers to the second like A in the alphabet and B as the second letter in the alphabet. Alpha and Beta versions of software are not usually their final release but don't tell Microsoft that. Microsoft experiments it's test software on it's customers putting making a buck first then figure out what is wrong. Beta refers to "push it out the door who cares if it works right." Let's sell the Beta to pay for the Alpha. It may even work.

well dear, Beta is just a word that they attached to a certain software when it's being released for testing. The point is, the software is released so it can be tested on a certain time, of course to know what will the comments of the users before they will have the release of the final version of that software.

Well if its software Beta means its still being tested... meaning that the software is ready to use but with some bugs that would later be fixed on the New release. Beta=Test

When people write software, it has a lot of bugs(problem like features not working properly or computer crashing and that sort of thing).

So they write the code and then they refine it.

For example an alfa stage would have(for example) 100 bugs(problems)

Then a beta would have like 40-20 bugs

The a release candidate would have 10-20

Even the final version of the software can have bugs, but minor ones. So that is why you have versions 1 then 1.0.1 and then 1.0.2 and 1.2 and then 1.2.1 and so on

Each new version fixes bugs, but some times also adds newer features and with them the possibility of newer bugs.

It's a version of software still in development but good enough for you to use.

It will have issues but they like you to try it and tell them where the problems are so you can help them to get it right.
