This is gonna sound nuts, but coming from a current college student's perspective, I prefer essay. Most people like multi choice, however, this is the problem I've noticed about multi choice tests...I will get the instructors that like to play head games with multi choice exams...for example: It will state the question and the your options are:
a) neither a or b
b) both b and c
c) only a and c
d) all the above
or why not just make it... "only a and d or only b and c but it might be d if it's Friday, but if it's a weekend it's definitely not a or b, but it's a weekday then it could be all the above, unless the weekday starts with a T, then it's only a and c". See what I'm sayin? Confusing right?
I like essays because they're open to interpretation and you get more leeway.

I've always been a fan of multiple choice. in school when given a test i was always somewhat relieved to see that the test was multiple choice if/when it was.
