The original Rat Pack went back to the 1940's and 1950's when a bunch of actors thought they should have more to say in the filming of a movie. They wanted input into the script.
The original Rat Pack included David Niven, Humphrey Bogart, and a young upstart with a lot of nerve to be expressing an opinion about movie making and scripts. That upstarts name was Frank Sinatra, who later became one of the most influential men in all of the entertainment industry. So much so, that John Kennedy often invited Sinatra to sit behind Kennedy whenever the opportunity arose.
Sinatra supported Kennedy during the 1960 Presidential campaign and Kennedy was often paraded around as being a 'member' of the Rat Pack because of Peter Lawford who was related to Kennedy, and at that time, Lawford was a member of the Rat Pack.
After the election, Sinatra felt betrayed by Kennedy as Kennedy began avoiding Sinatra who supported Kennedy during the campaign and for political reasons and appearances, Kennedy began having a conservative style friendship with Bing Crosby, a registered Republican. And, so began the Kennedy-Sinatra feud.
Many of the original members of the original Rat Pack formed their own independent movie company known as United Artists. This new movie company had the audacity to ask actors and actresses what they thought about the script and scenes during the shooting of a movie.
The Rat Pack we all came to know and love had Frank Sinatra as its mentor and included most of the characters in the original Oceans Eleven, starring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr, Joey Bishop and others.
Shirley McClain also hung around with Sinatra and company and was often considered the only other female member of the Rat Pack, other than Lauren Bacall when she was married to Humphrey Bogart.
I could go on and on...Great fun. Thanks for the question.
I hope I have answered your question.

Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford too -- but originally there was Humphrey Bogart in his last years. Sinatra, Martin, and a couple of the others spent a lot of time hanging out drinking at Bogart's home. One time when they turned up at his house very late and a bit the worse for wear like they crawled up out of the gutter, Bogart's wife Betty (aka Lauren Bacall) affectionately dubbed them the Rat Pack.
