"The Sun Also Rises" by Hemingway is FANTASTIC. I didn't like Hemingway until I finished that book. "Go Down, Moses" by Faulkner is fantastic. "Death Comes for the Archbishop" by Cather is definately worth it. In stark contrast to "The Sun Also Rises" is Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby." If you're looking for a realist novel, go with "Red Badge of Courage" by Steven Crane. Of course, "To Kill A Mockingbird" is probably one of the best peices of fiction out there and always a great read. "The Bell Jar" by Sylvia Plath is another great read. Anything by Twain. If you want a 'mystery' type book, then I recommend Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein." That is one of my favourites. "Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad is another good one. My list could go on and on...hope you find something that you like!

If you are preparing for the English essay, the best author can be F.Scott Fitzgerald. His 'The Great Gatsby' is one of the most interesting novel to analyze (after Crime and Punishment!). Well Hemingway is interesting but too musculine, for me. O. Henry maybe?

I also vote for "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. It's a simply wonderful book and not difficult to read. I also recommend "Catcher In The Rye" by J.D. Salinger. It was one of my favorite books in high school and is still one of the few books that changed me and my outlook on life. If you can get away with it, the more modern "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton is also a good read. And "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury is worth reading too.

I also vote for Mark Twain! Who needs heavy reading when you can get a laugh.

See if this is on your list. "The Pact" by Jodi Piccoult. I heard that it is being made required reading at some high schools. It is an EXCELLENT love story.

One of my favorite books of all time is 'To Kill A Mockingbird'. It's not your typical fiction, but it had me hooked.

EDIT: Mark Twain is HILARIOUS. You should read his stuff even if it's not on your school list.
