Is this the optimal distance to keep a router and modem? Will they not work well (disconnect a lot) if I keep them close? Help, I have bad connection with Comcast!

I don't believe so, however, try this to see if there is a problem with your setup try disconnecting the router (power it off as well) & connect the modem directly to your PC.

If this resolves the issue then there is a problem with your router ...could be a hardware issue or a configuration issue ... I doubt it's because they are close together. I've had mine one on top of the other for years & all is well.

If the connection is still bad then your provider is responsible to get it going correctly.

Nonsense! I have mine less than 1 inch from one another and have no problems.
Taking out the router from the chain like Philip T suggested and trying the modem connected directly is a good idea. Also, if you have the chance, try your setup using a different cable. If it was bent too much or "broken" that could cause a problem inside the cable or at the connecting plug.

The distance makes absolutely NO DIFFERENCE!! The key is a quality modem, router and cables!! If Comcast didn't give you a Motorola Surfboard exchange yours. Have the techsupport run check on your connection for the last 7 days. They can tell you exactly how many times you have dropped.
