It depends! Years ago, I had an audition for a motion picture that would have starred the late Madeline Kahn. As I was leaving, the casting director came up to me and said I was the one to hit it exactly they way they wanted. I was excited, but, didn't book the job.

I had a similar experience on a "Sex and the City" auditon, I auditioned for the Executive Producer. He gave me sides and when I read and he was laughing very loudly. Afterwards, he walked over to me and told me how funny I am (not the first time I've heard that!) I didn't get the booking!

If you were a casting director, what would you expect from someone who came to read for a project you were casting? Would you cast a child to play an adult? Would you cast a cat to play a dog?

Would you cast a literate person? Would you cast an illiterate? Would you cast a man or a woman?

What do you think 'they' really want? Really?!

The answer to your question is that 'they' want the best person for the role. They want someone who can read the lines and interact with the rest of the cast. They want 'names' to fill the above the line parts and every other part is like an ingredient in a recipe. You want the best you can find. When you are the best you can be, go and win that part.
