How can we rescue the United States from it's "Tiger Beat" mentality.?

Much to the chagrin of Ted Turner there are celebrity gossip reports all over CNN. AOL has them too, they are everywhere. There are the ubiquitous tabloids in the check out line. Why do adults read this pap? Can't we outgrow the "Tiger Beat," star-struck mentality? This material is anti-intellectual, don't people have any sense of shame or dignity?

Well, fortunately we have a free country. Unfortunately, the result is that we get to see more of what the consumer demands.
