With some searches in internet and a few ponderings within i think Vidyadhars have certain aspects. They have some connection with the no. 8, probably indicating "Ashta Siddhies" or "Ashta Vasus" or "Ashta Dikpals". Bhikshma Pithamah of Mahabharath was one among those Ashta Vasus.

Probably Vidyadhars were the Guards of Heaven, where as Gandharvas are artists and musicians of Heaven ruled by Lord Indra.

May be These Vidyadhars had a lot of magical and miraculus powers ("Animadi Siddhies") , may be thru Tantric acts and they used these powers to protect the Heaven, probably they are the Guardian Angels of Heaven.

Perhaps like Gandharvas, Vidyadhars also had relations with the Apsarses (The Heavenly Nymphs). May be for Gandharvas these Nymphs were source of inspiration for their artistic outflow, but for Vidyadhars, these Nymphs were probably tools for their worship.

Vidyadhars are presented probably as beings who do not care much of human beings and their activities, may be with an indifferent attitude towards human beings, probably suiting to their never bothered warrier nature.

They are presented travelling high in the Sky and having powers to disappear their bodies even when they are present as formless beings at the situations.

The literary meaning of Vidyadhar means One who wears Vidya or Knowhow.

The "Vrithrasur" of Srimad Bhagavath who was killed by Lord Indra is said to an incarnation of a Vishnubhakth Vidyadhar "Chitraketu" due to a curse from Goddess Parvathi Devi. That story jk found in the following link.

These are few comprehensions jk made from all those various links. If some more thoughts are there from somebody, jk would like to see that also..

luv and SAI RAM,

This is the best link I could give you on the Eight Vidyadharas. I'm pretty sure there are other links, but I rather enjoyed reading up on this one. Good luck on your search.
