A report just released by the US committee for human rights in north korea finally put into words what everyone already knew but chose to ignore; The dictatorship that is the workers party is guilty of crimes against humanity. Evidence has been gathered, and concluded that the people of north korea are suffering from the cruel suppression, and inhumane treatment of a fanatical regime that has chosen to isolate itself from the world. We now know that there are prison camps where people are tortured and killed on a daily basis. We know that all expression of free speech and practicing of religion is forbidden, We have heard about their draconian practices. Is it now time to act, to free the innocents from this hell on earth? Do we have a right to? What action could/should we put in place given the tense nuclear environment which has developed recently? We went into iraq quickly enough to free them, what about this time?

Thanks. Good answers so far. So we know its going to be difficult to do anything like we did in Iraq because of the risk of nuclear war, so what are our other options. What can everyday members of the community do?

Good point ACE. Refugees are going to be a problem, whether we use military action or not (hopefully it wont come to military action). The UN is using sanctions, and the international community is trying to take a tough stance to show the North Korean government that we dont like use of Nuclear weapons, but what is the alternative (Aside from all out war). What else should we be doing rather than just antagonising a clearly irrational government? Should we be preparing for the inevitable refugee issue? What can china do?

There's crimes against humanity everywhere. We did go to Iraq, and look at the mess we're in, we invaded because Saddam didn't have anything to keep us from coming in, like the WMDs they said he had. Kim Jong Il, is thinking. No one invades a country who has balls the size of their own. We are going to have to talk it out.

It's not that simple. N Korea lack infrastructures and resources and pretty much everything else. They have 1million men army and even if we over throw the regime what do you gona do with all the North Koreans? South Korea is going to be overwhelmed. Imagine all the cubans suddenly moving to the US. This may cause even bigger headache than Iraq. This isn't some video game where you just go in and walla! brand new country. If anything Iraq taught us is that building a model nation takes more than 3 years and military action. Solution is slow, gradual, incremental change to have North Korea open up at least economically much like China has done and try to push its government. Even if military action take place it may take just as long to establish new Korea without military action. I think people sometimes forget US army is made of real people and not some super robots.

Should have been done ages ago!!! Its no secret that it's been happening. Why has it taken a little nuclear weapons test for everyone to start taking notice. Besides, its not like we need an excuse to do something about this...look at Iraq, that was all based on heresay and a generational vandetta.

The only thing that seems to be keeping us from taking out the NK regime is China. But even the Chinese aren't too happy with the North Koreans these days.

this has been known for years hasn't it??
I think we should give aid & not stop it
but give the aid in food etc so the poor can be fed!!
it would cause millions to be killed if bully tactics were used because the bad bomb may get used
talking nice to the leader will help more than anything in the long run
making friends so to speak so he trusts
& i dont mean to break the trust just help to civilize the guy so he knows right from wrong

If the United States has a right to intervene in other countries, then the same can be said about other countries intervening in the United States. Who has the most nuclear weapons? Who has people locked up in concentration camps? The United States.
