Well first of all, let's answer one question at a time- you have three.
As an avid music lover and dj, lyrics will always play a role- age has no recognition. However, the trend I find most frightening is the attitude that the artists / bands have in regards to their fans. ( Not all of them though. ) Todays standards and morals are not being taught in schools- our youth is learning from music, television and movies and acting upon it. This doesn't sound fair to someone who grew up with Jerry Lee Lewis ( an example ) - there's no difference as to what he did as like someone as JayZ. It can be a great thing or a dangerous one and in the long run, the individual who listens to the " words " ultimately makes their own decisions. There are some artists who go out of their way to disrespect our elders and misuse the whole concept of what music is... it touches our soul, builds bridges and mends broken hearts. I am pleased someone asked this question... thank you for your time.

It certainly has had a significant impact. I think my life would be extremely boring without being exposed to the music that I have. Through the music, which is great by it self, I have met many good people and made lots of friends. It is kind of a journey through life, finding and listening to different types of music and you come across people that aren't all to disimilar from in many aspects of life. Worst experience perhaps was in when I was in high school. Someone wanted to teach me some jazz styles of music along with the blues and gospel. I was not use to their method or any method (no official musical training, no classical training, no real direction). I abandoned that oppurtunity and often I wish I did not because I would have learned a lot more about playing music. I play a little guitar. If I stuck with the person, I would play a lot of guitar, but I often have to tell my self that the rest of my life could have turned out much more different and I am ok with where I am now (not satisfied, just ok). Best experience. . . wow, being out on a huge camp site in the mountains of the state I live in. There was a huge Arts and Music festival. I slept very little and danced quite a bit. There was o much to see, so many people to interact with and I was there three days and three nights and I got so attached to the place and the people that I cried when I left, which is quite rare for me. So that was an eye opener.

music has an an amazing ability to slip right through our defenses and gain access into the deeper parts of who we are. even if we are not really concentrating on the lyrics.
You would be amazed how powerful this tool is. There is a lot of music being played today, that is basically killing people because of the message it is portraying, death, worthlessness, hopelessness, perversion is ok, and stuff like that.
On the other hand, music can bring hope, peace, life and strength, if it is focussed in the right direction.
But at the end of the day, it will all amount to absolutely nothing, unless its done for the Glory of the one who instituted music, your maker, God.

I've always thought that lyrics affect and influence people's mood they moment they are listening to them.
From time to time I listen to a specific song over and over again and let it influence more.
I think lyrics make us release bottled up emotions. This could be dangerous with teenagers. I guess, because they can't control their reactions and they identify themselves through other people and things. Music identity is very important to young people.
Adults tend to look for memories in music, but since youths lack a past they build themselves on other people's experiences.

yes some lyrics can do that to youth and as well as older adults, with the youth they think that when they haer rappers or rock artis say things in there songs that they have to be like them, but if parents took the time out to listen to the things that there kids listen to, then they may explan to them that some of the things that they are saying is just to sell there records. not every child or an adult can be influenested that easy

This is from James J's wife, Beth...
The music always reflects where the people are at, not reverse. The only way a song can be successful today is if the public backs it up with sales or d/l. Look at it that way.

I think everyone as a person is different on how lyrics effect them. Lyrics mean a lot to me and they do effect me, but my husband is the opposite. My daughter is effected by lyrics as well. I think it's the overall positive or negative content of the song that sways people. :-) I think any song can be taken in any context. It's all how a person perceives it. I have hear heavy metal Christian songs sound just as evil as Marilyn Manson songs. It's all in the mind of the listener.

Music can really put you in a mood. Or if you're dealing with a situation I find that I hear songs randomly that seem to talk about what I'm going through. It's really weird, and comforting because I know that I'm not the only one going through whatever it is.
