When I delivered my daughter the doctor wrote in my medical notes that she performed an emergency c-section due to failure to progress. My cervix was dilated at 2.5 cm but I was having continuous bleeding so as a precaution they augmented my labor. I was put on drips for three hours had no pain no steady contractions and so they finally took me into the labor room, kept checking my cervix, broke my water, and finally decided to move forward with the c-section. My question is that does this mean that I will have to have another c-section with this next pregnancy? Or is it advisable to just plan for the same thing again to be on the safe side? I also had a slight case of placenta previa and was on bed rest for a few months with my first pregnancy and perhaps it is a cause of concern for this pregnancy as well because there are also other risks involved.

Also wanted to ask if this failure to progress means that my cervix has a dysfunction because it did not dilate as nature intended ? I really worry about this and would appreciate any advice.

"Failure to progress" is medical-speak for "this baby isn't being born on the doctor's time, so let's yank her out!" Unless a person experiences cord prolapse or placenta previa, they should be able to labor as their body chooses. Your baby knows when the right time to come out may be. Repeat C-sections are usually done by doctors to save their rear ends from malpractice. However, chance of complication from further (vaginal birth after cesareans) are 1% or less. Be firm with your doctor about your birthing decisions, and barring further complications, there is no reason why you shouldn't birth naturally.

Failure to progress simply means that your cervix didn't dialate completely, it doesn't mean that there is a "problem" or that it will happen again. The doctor is the person you should be asking these questions of though.

Failure to progress just means your body did not want to finish its job, it does not mean it will happen again. Also your body may have done it, just amy have taken days & w/ todays medicine they are not going to put you at risk for a infection & distress to baby. Also VBAC's are very coomon (vagiginal birth after cecerian) but is less common if you have a large emergency scar. Your OB will tell you for sure. Good Luck!

You do not have to have another c-section!

You can if you NEED to, but letting it get to that point is your choice. If you have placenta previa next time, you can reevaluate at that time.
