That is the question of the millenium. I ask myself that and many people around me a lot. I'm not racist, or a bigot or anything. It's just the way that things are percieved. It is the same that we couldn't have a "White History Month" or a sticker on the back of our cars that says "White Pride".

I don't like that.

Because blacks are underrepresented on TV and in the media. BET was created as a network where black stars could have exposure to the public. Anyone can watch BET, not just blacks. FUBU was a clothing line started by 4 young black men to make money point blank period. Whites can wear FUBU if they want.

This country already caters to white people. We needed our own thing. We started BET because MTV never showed any black videos. And we have Black History Month (which is the shortest month of the year) because, we are required to learn about white history while in school. There are a lot of outstanding black people in history, and if we would have never set up our own TV channel, or have our own month, our youth would not know about it.

Why do ya'll always question why blacks can do this and that. Ya'll so busy worried about black people, ya'll have not noticed how many channels cater to the spanish speaking community. Especially when you have cable and satelitte. Their channels out number black channels.

And to the people stating black people are the minority...well nowadays, so are whites. Hispanics and Bi-racial americans make up the majority now. Look it up.

FACT: Music television never showed Black videos in the 70's and early 80's, except may only show one in every 6 month. That made the Black community to come up with their OWN MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT television. Today, it doesn't only attract the same Black community, but also attracts and all races, of all countries. BET is now viewed over 15 countries, and now MTV plays Black music videos like there is now a BIG COMPETITION which there is. You already have over 80% of WET televisions.

It seems people are missing the point of this question and using it as an excuse to attack others.
Terlock put it best, everyone has the right to celebrate their differences, I agree whole heartedly!!
This question is not about that but rather why can't whites? And in my humble opinion because minorities WERE discriminated against so badly (no-one but morons can deny that) and so "unrepressed" have the freedom now and the ability to express that self pride, as they should!
I am referring to ANY minority be it race, sexuality or religion based.
I just don't understand either, why if caucasians do it we're somehow "as bad as Hitler" and it is seen a celebration of "not being a minority". I don't agree that it is o.k., but it is what it is!

BET came because black artist was not being played anywhere else. In the beginning Mtv didn't play black artist music. If you don't believe me look it up. Mr Johnson took $60,000 and made over a billion dollars. Their was never a point in the history of tv that white artist was not being played. You need to learn about other cultures then maybe you would understand why things happen. I do it all the time. I love learning about other people cultures.

not to come off defensive or upset but, you have to understand that BET , essence , and Ebony magazine weren't developed yesterday. many of these were started in the 70's and 80's when all of television and periodicals was mainly geared toward white people. back then MTV showed 95% of white music and artists and only 2% of anything black. they were made back then so that black people could have something relevant to their lives. for example Cosmo, and Glamour magazine have been around for quite some time now but back then they never had much material that would be relevant to black woman needs(hair , makeup, etc..). so what would a black woman be doing reading it. its only now that they are beginning to have information about hair and makeup to accommodate to us( and i must say they are doing a good job! b/c i read their magazines alot). 90% of all television and magazines are already white. so you see its nothing personal.

Because 90% or more of television is WET. Just because there isn't a channel called white tv doesn't mean there isn't a surplus of channels whose shows mainly target white america.

It just seems to me that Black people are an oppressed minority, and they have more reason to celebrate their achievements because they are faced with racism and discrimination everyday. For instance, when they have "Gay pride parades" it makes sense because they are different from the norm and like to celebrate their diversity. It wouldn't make much sense to have "Straight pride parades" or "White history month" because we are the majority.
Just my take.

Because Black people are the minority and can create things that caters to themselves.
