I was told I have ovarian cysts about 3 months ago, knowing I have had them for possibly 2 or 3 years. Anyways, the doctor said they are only about the size of a pea, but when I lay flat on my back in bed I can feel something swell up (almost feels like a baby kicking) and go back down. As time goes by, driving in the car and normal daily activities seem to be causing me pain in the area. Not to mention my monthly cycle. I was on birth control for 2 years straight and all the doctor wants to do is watch them, even though I know they're getting worse. I have been to a couple doctors, but am now without health insurance. Any advice?

I have polycystic ovaries syndrome. I did not find this out until I had to have emergency surgery six years ago for a cyst that had grown to 5cm. So you are definitely ahead of the game by knowing you have them. It is rather common in women and completely manageable. The BCPs are to help the cysts from swelling and rupturing. They also regulate your period. I can definitely tell the difference when I don't take them b.c my pain level is very high during my period. All the docs can do is watch them. As long as they are not growing you'll be fine. If you are in any type of pain, you should go back to the doctor (a specialist is best). Make sure you log the pain and describe it. THat way when you go to the doctor you can give specific info so they can make a more informed diagnosis. However, some pain is normal. Cramps are cramps and they don't go away. I also have some pain (discomfort) during ovulation.

The only way to tell is to get checked by a doctor. They will most likely do an ultrasound to look for the cysts. Do you have unusually painful periods? I ask because this is also a symptom of ovarian cysts. As for the heart palpitations, that could be anxiety over the cysts or something completely unrelated. Either way, you need to be examined by a professional to know for sure. Don't worry it's not painful to have the ultrasound and it only takes a few minutes. Good luck!

I have had an ovarian cysts. The do swell (get larger) and are very very painful. I think that if the birth control did not work (it is intended to shrink it), then you need to have it removed because it is only going to get bigger and more painful. They do burst. My sister has had a few that burst. Extremely painful. I hope that you are seeing or have seen a OB/GYN specialist and not just a family doctor. I know they are all doctors but when it come to female matters I'm comforted in knowing that I'm in the hands of a doctor that specializes in that alone. Good luck.

Yes, they can swell. They can also grow larger and burst. I've had ovarian cysts as well. I use to get cryosurgery when I had health insurance. Now I don't get any treatment. The reason I get cysts is because I have blocked fallopian tubes, and my egg attaches to the ovary forming a cyst. Sometimes it clears up on it's own, but sometimes it grows larger and larger until it bursts. Causes quite a bit of pain for me, but I'm sort of use to it.
