Like myself, few applicants have had prior fast food experience and thus at the least there will be basic training, usually on-the-job.

In my experience, a paid orientation precedes actual working in the restaurant. During in which, I received an employee handbook which basically covers company policies including:

+ At-will employment - you may be fired at any time for any legal reason / you may quit at any time

+ Dress and related codes of conduct

+ Wage Information - how much different personnel get paid, check distribution dates

Oftentimes you will not be the only new employee and your co-workers will usually help you out. Depending on the manager, he / she may either be extremely vague eg. clean the lobby, or the complete opposite eg. wipe the tables, push in the chairs, empty the trash, etc. You will become accustomed to either in time. As for owner/operators (if a franchisee), they will usually be courteous towards you, however, if you find yourself as a first-line manager later on, they take the heat.

Do not expect to be on certain stations (grill, assembly, fries). You may find yourself on the cash register and cleaning lobby for a certain period before you are trained elsewhere. Those with English as a second language will probably be placed in the back (grill & assembly - putting the sandwiches together).

You will make mistakes, don't worry about it. Fix it, and do ask questions; better an irritated manager / co-worker than an angry customer. Perhaps one last time that you will notice, mangement / employee turnover may be rapid - you may see someone for the first and last time on the same shift.

Best of luck.

Well, expect it to be very fast paised. Also, expect to feel as though you're in the way of everyone. They will probably start you off on bun toasting, or fries or something like that. Those are easy, so don't stress out. Remember, this is the best time to get experience, keep track of all you do as you can then put that on a resume for an even better job. Good luck!!!

A lot of my friends worked on a fastfood chain before and they pretty enjoyed their stay there. Indeed, working on the kitchen is much easier than working on the cashier. Most likely, fastfood chain supervisors are pretty nice and human so you'll find it easy getting along with them. What all of my friends complain is the customer. As they say, you're unlucky when you're the cashier because not all of the customers are nice. You'll be the "shock absorber", "yell listener", and according to them, being called "stupid" infront of many people 5 times a day is just normal. And you have no right to get angry. I'm not scaring you but that's true. Anyways, this will test your patience. That's why being the cashier is always the last level on the fastfoodchain. So goodluck

I came into fast food not knowing a thing and I came out of it knowing more about customer service than I ever did. I also know how to run a cash register, which helps.

Going into fast food, they don't expect you to know anything about the job. This is one of those jobs that you will get a lot of hands-on training from. Just relax and think positive. When they train you to be a cashier, remember this; if you can type, then you can operate a cash register.

I got my job at MickeyD's in '89. I didn't have any experience. They trained me. They train you anyway because they have a certain way they want things done. I cried after getting home from my first day because I thought they were going to fire me but they didn't. Where I worked they let me train whatever position I wanted to try, it kinda helps if you want to be a manager someday.

For a tip: Don't be nervous, fast food places are used to hiring teens. Just know that everyone you will be working with started out just like you.

Hello my friend........Take it easy, those jobs just look intimidating, once you get in a few days you'll be fine. Lets say it is "Jack-in-the-box", do you do any cooking at home? Not that much difference, only you make more food, with Jacks, it's mostly hamburgers, the lowest job is usually on the grill, they have a system they use even with the burgers, after you do it a couple of times you'll be fine. Put in your application.....lets hope you get the job, remember they show you how to do everything. Go in there with a positive attitude......tell yourself that you can do this....keep telling your self that......before you know it, the day is over, you've got your first shift in.Every day after that will be easier and easier.........GOOD LUCK.........LATER

Just go in there and listen to what your trainers tell you and do the best you can. You will probably follow someone for a few days or so, so don't worry about that. If you have any questions don't be afraid to ask, no question is a stupid question at work. It shows you care. Good Luck on your first day.

Most fast food outlets have excellent training programs and if you leave it will help you get other jobs because they have a good reputation...
