id like some ideas and thoughts from you guys...ok my opinion is this...i mean i can go into detail but the jist is this:this act allows our president and his officials to draw the line on what is and is NOT considered torture, correct? so basically he has altered our constitution and freed himself and others from ever being accused of a war crime(most crimes), right? NOw im all for our safety and prevention of terrorism BUT is this just a foor-in-the-door for Bush and his officials to twist and turn laws when HE feels they need to be changed?? it scares me only because i havent seen much in the way of progress in this war...not much has changed over in the mid-east, right?(as far as their own state of progress),right? so whats the deal with changing VERY important laws and rights of people? and civilians? is it going to be OKAY to kill a prisoners wife or kids to get him to talk? and if so, what is next for the USA?? pleez enlighten me i NEED IT!! lol =0)

JIM: i began to see a point in your answer UNTIL i read your conclusion which basically states that you would have blown up the entire nation of iraq/middle east etc?? to me that seems like you have some personal anger issues....the human race should be generalized ....not everyone in iraq should die and innocent children should not be killed for their family members wrongdoings...i hate what happened on 9/11 and i WOULD do what i needed to do if ever put in a situation youve described, but teeter-tottering on the edge of passing laws to immunize against breaking them is a very real, very scary potential....im sorry you dont agree but i also think some anger is clouding your judgement...in any case thanks for your ideas and thoughts

I do not believe that any public official should EVER be able to pass a law that grants himself immunity for crime that he committed. This latest law does exactly that: it states that anyonce who conducted wiretaps without a warrant prior to the creation of this law cannot be prosecuted for it.
When our elected officials begin to think that it's OK to break the law, then pass laws granting themselves immunity, it's time to get some new elected officials.
I would like to see this law brought before the Supreme Court. I suspect they would strike it down.

Just because Bush and his croonies have changed the law in the U.S. doesn't mean that the law has been changed in the world. ie. the UN, which I know we have a lot of control over, but if we starting doing some wicked stuff to the people in other countries the UN will have no choice but to put sanctions on the US and other stuff of that sort, and also bring Bush to trial for crimes against humanity. Not to mention that it can be challenged by the supreme court and also taken out of law when there is a change in Congress or the White House.
Remember if you do not like the way your politicians are voting let them know by writing them letters. Not emails because that is too easy to do these days. If you keep sending letters to your Senator and Congress people telling them your feelings it will get your point across. Also stop voting for republicians for the house when there is one in the White House. That gives the president too much power and control over what he can do.

I would ask you this, let's place you in the Twin Towers on 9/11, and by your location you will lose your life that day. Let's put now a person in front of you as your prisoner who knows what is about to happen and that you will lose your life and the lifes of nearly 3,000 others or more. Would you use torture to find out what he or she knows. Can't easily answer this, imagine your mother, your husband, or your children are on the floors above you. What would you do?
I wonder, if you have a believe in God, how you will explain your inactivity that cost 3,000 people their lifes when you attempt to enter heaven? Seems to me you should be held accountable, at least an accessory.
It is one thing to be a civilain and never once have your life at risk, it is another, to be on the front lines in harms way. To me, freedom has to be earned, what have you personally done to earn your freedom?
Protecting the scum of the earth - I am not into that. Especially when they target innocent women and children and put our children at war protecting this country, and indeed you.
BTW another way of looking at this issue, the average terrorist bomber today besides killing himself usually takes 37 people with him or her as the case may be. At that rate, in a world of 6.7 billion people, only about 150,000,000 Islamic bombers are needed to eliminate all but one billion Muslims that would remain. Some thing like that, I saw the projections once a while ago. That these terrorist attack women and children, they are systematically eliminating your future with every women and child they kill.
Do you think I am a terrorist? I only ask to left alone in the pursuit of happiness, when someone invites themselves to my ball game, they better know and understand, I play by my rules.
The only problem with Iraq, we fought a police action, not a war. My war would have been over in 18 minutes, cost less than five million dollars, not one American life would have been lost - and their would not have been any news coming out of Iraq - there would not have been an Iraq left.

I agree with you.
The pure fact that Congress even ALLOWED this bill to be passed is pathetic and disgusting.
I find it hypocritical how Bush claimed the law saved American lives, however, it has the potential to damage the life of someone else. If you know what I mean.

it will change our country as we know it. forget the constitution and the geneva convention. it is the most horrifying thing yet. bush has broken more laws than any before him. this war is about oil, freedom has nothing to do with it, or human lives. i have no politcal affiliation, to me, george bush is the worst thing that has happened to this country, and is the beginning of the end. im behind you all the way.
