probation is a period of time at the beginning of employment (usually 3 to 6 months) during which the employer can terminate you for any reason if they feel you are not adequate for the job. a probationary employee is one who has not yet completed the probationary period.

It means that for a specific period of time, you are in a "tryout" status. Probationary periods are usually 3 months, but can be less. If you meet the performance standards set forth by your employer, you become a permanent, regular employee at the end of the probation period. If your performance isn't good, or your work habits are questionable, such as arriving late everyday, the employer can terminate you at any time during the probationary period and you will not be entitled to any benefits or severance pay (and in most cases, you won't be allowed to collect unemployment money, either).

Every new hiree has a certain amount of probationary period, which is usually 90 days. During that time they keep close watch on you to see how you do your job, whether you are punctual or not, and how you get along with everyone else. If you pass you stay at the job. If not keep on searching.
