i think the little girl in the red coat represented a mark. It was a mark from the abyss of gray colored people . When you see her walking amongst all the people, you will notice her and be curious as to what will happen to her. Then you see her lying with all the dead people piled up then you begin to see what happens to your mark. She represents all the children, men, women who died during the holocaust. You mark her and see that she too is not saved from human greed and destruction.

I saw the movie years ago, but I think the little girl represented, beauty, innocence and hope.
You saw her, and you thought, okay, this girl has to survive.
When you see her daed later I think it designed to convey the hopelessness of the situation. It is as if the beauty did not matter, and innocence was destroyed. Had she lived you might have felt better about even just one seeminly special girl surviving, but she didn't and I think that is give you an idea of the scale of the tragedy.
